Boring and Uninteresting?

It's funny that some people find my life boring and uninteresting, while they consider theirs as thrilling and exciting.

I barely have time to sleep because my sked is almost always full. I am a full time father and husband, I have work, then I have theatre and gigs on the side.

The people who thinks my life is boring, they're single, no responsibilities, and most of the time, they go to work and go on drinking sessions.

Please forgive me if I don't consider drinking as exciting, as they don't consider theatre and music interesting. Yes, call me anti-social. I am.

Dispensable

I came back because I had such good memories here. It was not the best times of my career, but it was certainly memorable. Never did I expect to be in a situation like this with my batchmates. Pardon my French, but I cannot find a better word to describe our situation other than SH*TTY.

We were the unlucky ones who was certified around the same time from communications training and was given a job offer for this retail account, to serve only for the peak season as they call it. What made it worse was that we had an instant training - compressed into a little less than 2 weeks when it was supposedly a month. We had trainer who was not really a trainer yet (I'm sure she's not certified), and spent most of her time reading the slides which I think is her way of "training" us.

Four weeks of taking calls, we're still given our measly training allowance. Heck, the security guards are getting a lot more than us, and to think that we have the same duties as the regular employees whose basic pay is more than double our allowance. Worse is that we are not assured of being absorbed here and getting the chance to become regular employees. They told us that we will be transferred to another account, and undergo PST again for more than a month this time. That will mean continuing our sorry excuse of an allowance until early next year. I cannot afford that. Not with a daughter who's in school.

*sigh*

Hoping for the best but not really expecting to stay here for long. It's sad to think that though my first stint here was not perfect, I was in good company in a company and account that really took care of us as we took care of those below us.

Now we're just dispensable.

Is It the End for Pacman?

After shift this morning, I went home to work on a few things, then I went back to the office to watch the Pay per View fight of Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez - their fourth showdown.

Pacman promised that he would make the fight short, and in a way it was. Just not the outcome Manny and a lot of Filipinos expected. It was an outcome I expected a long time ago, but not the way that it happened. The way that it happened is a shock to the whole world.

Don't get me wrong, I so love Pacman and I still am so proud of everything that he has done, but after their second showdown with Marquez, I really thought that he should have retired already. His fights in the last 2 or 3 years have been boring. Yes, he won most of them by decision, and lost a couple including the latest and probably the most painful since he was unconscious on the canvass for a good number of minutes.

Juan Manuel Marquez is a fighter. Manny Pacquiao is a fighter, a public servant, a lay minister, an actor, a basketball player, a businessman, and what not.

I hope this fight will be a wake up call for Pacman to make him realize that the money he has earned is more than enough for his children's future. He now has to think of himself and his family. He has nothing more to prove in the sport of boxing. He is already in the record books, and his legacy has been cemented a long time ago. Yes, there are boxers who are still fighting despite their age, but they are people who doesn't have anything else to do, and don't have enough lief savings. Pacman can do more if he decides to hang his gloves for good.

Day 29. Favourite overall actor you have seen from the musical and why?

I am very much biased with Colm Wilkinson. And Quast. And Maguire. And Drew Sarich. And Ramin Karimloo. Haha. I love most of them, but Colm will always be on top of the list.

Day 28. Dream cast for the stage show?

I always thought that the 1995 10th Anniversary Dream Cast was THE Dream Cast for the musical.

Now if I were to nitpick that cast to make my own dream cast while suspending time, I think Frances Rufelle will be more appropriate than Lea. Yes, Lea is a Goddess, but I just don't really feel her Eponine. Her Eponine is way too strong for the character. I never saw her vulnerability, which was natural in Frances.

Barry James would have been fun to watch too, though Alun was still amazing.

Day 27. Dream cast for the upcoming movie?

The movie opens in the Philippines next month - January 16 to be exact - and so far, I'm loving the combination of Hollywood greats and West End immortals. I also love Tom Hooper's decision to pay homage to the old cast by giving some of them cameos in the movie. Roles that are good enough to be included in the movie, and small enough not to really be recognized so as not to take away the attention from the main actors.

Looking at the clips released so far, I'm not that sold with Sascha Baron Cohen as Thenardier yet, but I'm sure he'll do great. He's a great actor, and Tom Hooper and Cam Mack trust him.

May I also add that having the 'real' versus perfection in the singing is giving me goosebumps. That's what made our own little production of Les Mis different from the other productions, I've always wanted the portrayals to be real. Yes, a good singer is, well, good, but I want someone who can really act and sing at the same time, and I'm blessed to have had the chance to share the stage with them.

Going back to the movie, I trust Tom and Cam that they have formed the best possible cast for the movie, dream cast if you may. After all, it took them 27 years to make this epic musical into a movie.

I'd Give My Life for You

By Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg
From Miss Saigon

You who I cradled in my arms, You,

Asking as little as you can.
Little snip of a little man,
I know I'd give my life for you.

You didn't ask me to be born, You,
Why should you learn of war and pain.
To make sure you're not hurt again,
I swear I'd give my life for you.

I've tasted beyond all fear,
And you should know it's love that brought you here.
And in one perfect night, when the stars burned like new,
I knew what I must do.
I'll give you a million things I'll never own,
I'll give you a world to conquer when you're grown.

You will be who you want to be, You,
Can choose what ever heaven grants.
As long as you can have a chance,
I swear I'll give my life for you.

Sometimes I wake up,
reaching for him.
I feel his shadow brush my head.
But there's just moonlight on my bed.

Was he a ghost, was he a lie?
That made my body laugh and cry.
Then by my side the proof I see,
His little one, Gods of the sun bring him to me.

You will be who you want to be, You,
Can choose whatever heaven grants.
As long as you can have a chance,
I swear I'll give my life for you.
No one can stop what I must do.

I swear I'll give my life for you.

Miss Saigon Auditions in Manila

The smoke has cleared. The very first auditions for the planned revival of Miss Saigon in London is over. I am in tears and SUPER PROUD of my friends who dared. They went the distance to follow their dreams.

In the first round, the auditionees were asked to sing a part of their prepared audition song - mostly the chorus part. Therese, Mikko, JJ, Miko and Jee didn't make it past the first round, but I'm so proud of them as I always am. I'm sure it was not easy facing Cam Mack's trusted representatives, and the all other almost 500 auditionees.

Fritz and Karencitta on the other hand made it to the second round where the "survivors" were asked to sing the whole song this time. Again, I'm so proud of them considering that a lot of professional singers and professional thespians did not make it.

But among all my friends who auditioned, one shines above all else. The Ultimate Champion, the Fierce Songstress and now, I'd like to call her the Ultimate Survivor as she's one of the seven ladies who made it. Yes, it's Shin Shin, otherwise known to the world as Rachelle Ann Go. She got in along with Tanya Manalang, Apple Chiu, Frencheska Farr, Emerald Bañares, Mary Jane Solomon and Aicelle Santos. The lead role of Kim will be chosen from among them, and biases aside, I don't see any other girl who has all the qualities of 'Kim' but Shin.

No casting has and will be announced, since the creative team will still have auditions in London for the other (Caucasian) characters. One thing is for sure though. Shin is IN! She survived and yes, I am so damn proud!

And by the way, may I just say that my friends who made it past the first round all sang the songs that I suggested to them. Those friends who were up to the first round? Let's just say they sang the songs that they thought were best for them.

I'm 32

Today would have been another ordinary day for me, but there were a few people who made sure this would be anything but ordinary for me. Yes, I turned 32 years old today.

My tita, who's like my second mother as she's the biological mom of my soul siblings, treated us to a super yummy early dinner at Dessert Factory. It was only my second time to eat there. The first time was with the Bisdaks a long time ago. After dinner, tita gave me a super beautiful Red Ribbon birthday cake from my soul siblings. Those alone already made my birthday special.

When we got home, a big box was waiting for me. Mom said it was delivered by 2 guys riding a motorcycle, and they said they didn't know who sent the box. It was a custom made box with custom designs that included my picture as Jean Valjean, a picture of Victor Hugo, and a lot of quotes and lyrics. Inside were a lot of things: a coffee mug, a smiley stress ball, a diary, an inspirational booklet, a desk clock, a keychain, a pen, a red cloth, and a copy of 'Footprints in the Sand'.

I went to the office with a smile on my face, and a smile in my heart. I never expected people to really remember my birthday, much more exert effort to make it memorable. I feel loved today. So loved.

Happy birthday to me.

Thank you, Lord, for another year.

Blue

I am back to a place where I've stayed for almost 3 years before. Aside from a few familiar faces, so many things have changed, most especially the quality of training.

I am really disappointed, considering that not so long ago, we were under the best trainers and we went through hell and back to earn our lanyards and our pins. We prided ourselves in wearing our colored lanyards because we knew that we earned it.

Change.
The only constant thing in the world.

*sigh*

Day 26. Favourite pairing? (I don’t mean favourite ship. Your favourite established relationship or friendship in the musical or book).

I am tempted to say Valjean and Fantine, but I think Grantaire's and Gavroche's connection is the most touching, especially when Gavroche dies. Enjolras' and Grantaire's friendship is also worth mentioning.

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Day 25. Favourite members of the ensemble and swing?

I don't know if you can consider Drew Sarich a member of the ensemble or swing, but I think he's so amazing. Valjean, Javert, Enjolras, Grantaire. Playing one of those characters is a dream itself. Imagine Drew playing all those at different times in his career. And his range? Out of this world!

Day 24. Favourite cast?

The tenth anniversary cast - the Dream Cast - is my favorite cast. Sure, I prefer Barry James to Alun Armstrong, but doesn't mean I like Alun less. Though I was blown away by Michael Maguire, I wouldn't mind if it was Anthony Warlow since they're both amazing.

Day 23. Is there a character you dislike? Why?

I feel that each character in Les Mis has his/her own story to tell, and they've added to the beauty of the story so there's no character that I really dislike.

All of the characters in Les Mis are broken in a way, and that's what makes them beautiful.

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Day 22. Which character can you relate to in the book or musical and why

I am able to relate to different characters of Les Mis in different phases of my life. That's the beauty of Les Mis that I've been telling so many people. It's a story where people can relate to so many characters.

In different stages of my life, I have been Fantine, Marius, Eponine, Cosette, even Javert, but for most parts of my life so far, I have been Valjean.

Go! Education, GO CTC! ♥

Tuesday evening, CTC got a message from Talespin and DepEd.
Wednesday afternoon, I announced the event and asked who'd be free to perform for the coming weekend.
Thursday, people confirmed their attendance.
Friday, songs were assigned.
Saturday & Sunday, CTC rocked SM Cebu!

What's wrong with this picture?
We weren't able to rehearse.. AT ALL! Haha!
No rehearsals, no problem!

Versatility and passion are just two of CTC's strengths, and I'm just so blessed every single time I get the chance to share the stage with these extraordinary individuals. I am blessed and extremely thankful.

THANK YOU, everyone, for your sacrifices just to be with us in this event.

Aisa of Talespin, the whole Talespin organization and the Department of Education, for believing in us and for giving us the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful event..

Therese, Pot2x, Junrey, Algen, Mikko, Romelyn & Anther, for sacrificing more important things on a Saturday afternoon just to be with us. I truly appreciate your effort to master your songs despite having no time rehearse. You are all, as always, amazing. God bless you, guys..

Gio, for finally saying yes to go on-stage and perform with us. After 24 shows behind the scenes, your long overdue debut as a performer with CTC was just perfect. I hope this is just a preview of things to come for you with CTC. God bless you, TGU..

Te Gayle, Tingge, Master & April, for always finding time whenever I need you, despite your super busy schedules. I truly appreciate your passion for the craft, and the inspiration that you continue to give to me and to everyone in CTC. God bless you..

Baby Insik, Andrew, RJ & Raven, for being with me the whole weekend when you can rather be somewhere else. I appreciate and so impressed with how you've accepted the challenge to learn new songs, new lines, in an instant, and still delivering them perfectly. God bless you..

Atchick, Rica & Marilyn, for the amazing support and patience. Continue to work hard to improve your craft, keep your feet always on the ground, and don't stop believing, for you will also have your time to own the stage on your own in God's time. God bless you..

Danj & Gerald, for the amazing job with the sounds. I truly appreciate how you willingly sacrificed your primary purpose of going there, just to make sure everything in the technical side ran smoothly. God bless you, both..

Tito Jay & Tita Rhoda, for the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious support, most especially for opening your house and your hearts to us. You're the coolest parents that I know, and someday, when I grow up, I want to be just like you! Haha! God bless you..

Dan & Kean, for the instant support when we needed more personnel. God bless you..

Jorem, for always being there to capture these moments perfectly. God bless you..

Tito Danny & Mama Lina, for the amazing support and guidance from the very start. We wouldn't be where we are now if not for you, and we can never thank you enough for that. God bless you..

TePau, for accepting the challenge and for doing all songs perfectly. I'm sorry for your phone. I can so relate with the pain, but just believe that that person needed it more than you do, and something a lot better will come your way. God bless you, TePau..

Valerie, Dib & Con, for volunteering to join despite your fully-booked skeds. I truly appreciate the thought and the concern. God bless you..

The Lord Almighty, for making everything possible. Thank you for making us Your instruments. We will continue doing our best to touch one life at time through these gifts that You gave us. To You be the Glory now and forever..

It was truly an honor to have been a part of the Go! Education caravan. As a parent, as an educator, as a thespian and as a Filipino, it was an experience I will never forget, much more so that I got to go through it with my CTC family.

Yes, it was truly a rollercoaster of a weekend, with TePau losing her phone and me losing my job, but hey, we got to share our gifts with a lot of people, we got a standing ovation on our last day, and hopefully we touched a few lives with our music so, yes, I can again say that life is still so much beautiful.

Farewell, VNI

So many things have happened, and will happen in the next few days, the next few weeks. I will be saying goodbye to a lot of people, to a lot of things, to a place I've loved since I started working here three years ago. Yes, time to move on once again. I will welcome this change with open arms because I know the Lord will never let me down.

We're on the road
We move from place to place
And oftentimes when I'm about to call it home
We'd have to move along
Life is a constant change...

The friends we know we meet along the way
Too soon the times we share form part of yesterday
'Cause life's a constant change
And nothing stays the same..

23. Is there a character you dislike? Why?

If there is a character I dislike in Les Mis, it has to be Marius. Aside from showing his selfish side a lot of times, I just can't explain why I dislike him. Haha. Maybe because I have to choose a character just to answer this item in the challenge.

Oh my friends, my friends forgive me
That I live and you are gone.
There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on and on.

22. Which character can you relate to in the book or musical and why?

I realized that it's taking me forever to finish the Les Mis challenge, so I'm going to continue it now and hopefully finish it soon. Haha!

I've played Thenardier longer than Valjean, but I can relate with Jean Valjean the most. Being forgiving after being persecuted is a great weakness for me. I would rather play the role of a martyr than a bully, and that's Valjean right there. There was a time when I called him pathetic because I really think he is, but then I'm also describing myself. Yes, I am pathetic like Valjean, but like him, I have also experienced my full humanity. I've experienced how it is to truly live.

Yet why did I allow that man,
To touch my sould and teach me love,
He treated me like any other,
He gave me his trust,
He called me brother..
~Jean Valjean

About to Move On Once Again

Martial law at the office that's slowly leading to turmoil, I am again looking for a new job somewhere else. I am definitely going back to the academe some time at the end of this year, or early next year, but between then and now, I need to feed my family, at least my daughter.

If I'm still here in this company in October, I would be celebrating my third year. Yes, I stayed here for a long time because I loved the company, and I loved the people around. I still do. It's just that our so-called manager has finally shown his dark side. I don't believe he changed. I believe that this is really who he is, and that he just hid it from everyone else before.

I have a bullseye on my back just because he puts malice in everything that's happened in the office. EVERYTHING. And that's a person supposedly "innocent" from the corruptions of society. He's a great example of someone trying to show this to the world, yet unconsciously showing something else.

Yes, actions speak louder than words, and I'm about to do a lot of action with very few words very soon.

LifestyleBohol * At the End of the Day: A Review of Les Misérables (in Bohol)

LifestyleBohol * At the End of the Day: A Review of Les Misérables (in Bohol)
by Ludwig Bon Quirog y Migriño

This review article's text is exactly as it appears on the August 5th, 2012 issue of LifestyleBohol.  Of course, since this is a webpage, I went crazy with the photos.  I hope they don't end up making this entry confusing for anyone.

Enjoy reading!
______________________________

I was in Manila on a trip to see the French play, God of Carnage, when my Aunt Bing told me she was giving me a ticket to see Les Misérables at the Bohol Cultural Centre.  I leaped with joy!  “Two French stage shows on the same week?”  I said to myself, “It’s not even Christmas yet.  What did I do to deserve this awesomeness?”

Over a month before that day, I had known about it.  DreamBig Productions and Cre8tive Thespians Circle Inc, the Cebuano companies that brought the musical to Bohol, had created a lot of noise on Facebook about a supposed Les Miz production but I didn’t take them seriously.  I couldn’t help it; I hadn’t heard about them before and I wasn’t sure if they could deliver.  I was obviously wrong to have doubted them and my aunt’s enthusiasm for art proved to be an enormous blessing!

The Show

July 27th, opening night, came before I knew it.  It was to be the night of “ultimate Misery,” as West End and Broadway producer Cameron Mackintosh would put it.  The ticket said the show would start at 7:00PM but we had to sit through half an hour of dead air before they actually turned the lights off and pulled the curtains up.  It wasn’t the production team’s fault, though.  The place didn’t properly fill up until 7:20.  I guess we’ve gotten used to events starting an hour behind schedule that we tend to take time for granted.

I watched the show again on the second night, where a large part of this review will be based on since I was seated nearer to the stage.  Before I go about it, however, let me make it clear that I won’t be telling the story or talking about character backstories or enumerating every single musical number in this article.  This is a review, not a summary.  If you want to know about Les Misérables, Google it or read the novel.

The show began with the familiar overture and Work Song and I was pleased when I noticed the lapel microphones sticking out of the actors’ ears, knowing the singing was live.  Thankfully, I didn’t have to endure a medley of pre-recorded tracks like I did with a few local productions in the past.  What I had to endure, though, was the very bad audio system.  While the choruses were really good, the solo lines sounded irreconcilably hollow, which was very irritating.  Add to the list of flaws the fact that some of the lapels also had problems, which rendered some songs practically inaudible to people beyond the fifth row.

Jean Valjean

I noticed that, Sonny Alquizola, the actor playing Jean Valjean had a vocal quality comparable to that of Colm Wilkinson, the Canadian tenor who originated the role in the West End and on Broadway.  When he ages considerably, there’s a good chance he might even achieve the same timbre.  My companions and I were certainly bowled over with his performance of Bring Him Home, a song written specifically for the Canadian Tenor.

Alquizola had a few difficulties here and there, but who didn’t?  His most notable predicament was in achieving a solid grip of the very lofty final note of the song Who Am I, a high B which is normally held for seven seconds.  He was also a good actor - his stage behavior changed as he supposedly got old throughout the musical.  He even added more huskiness to his voice in the latter part, which gave an extra tinge of realism to his characterization.

Inspector Javert

The main antagonist of the musical, Inspector Javert, was played by Andrew Vincent Esplanada.  His rendition of Stars was classic—punctuated with the eyes of an angry Roman god about to smite the unrighteous.  While Esplanada wasn’t quite the despicable pious prick that Javert was meant to be, he knew how to stare at Valjean and the rest of the cast with such hatred and disdain, which helped him make it perfectly clear that his character meant business.  His abuse directed towards Fantine as a prostitute made me want to throw a can of soda at him—which meant he did it right.

Fantine

Gayle Marie Sinadjan, portraying Fantine, had a smooth voice with a beautiful vibrato—a cross between Joanna Ampil and Ruthie Henshall but definitely neither.  She took my heart away during The Confrontation when she sang of the character’s daughter, Cosette, as though she had a real child to sing about.  Her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream was vocally impressive but I have to say she moved way too much.  Her voice would have been enough to reduce me to a teary pulp but her physical activity while singing proved too distracting to elicit genuine sympathy.  Overall, she was very good.  Her appearance in Valjean’s Death sent chills down my spine.  It was the same experience I had when I first saw the show several years ago.

The Thénardiers

Playing Monsieur and Madame Thénardier were Warren Clyde Tompong and April Anne Moncada respectively.  Oh what a comic relief those two were after a series of miserable scenes depicting death and anguish!  Tompong sang Master of the House like a pro—prancing with a naughty tiptoe all over the stage—singing about how he rips his customers off and steals from them.  He even had a faux 18th century peasant Londoner accent.

Moncada, on the other hand, really needs to be lauded for her amazing vocal timbre.  She would have very easily stolen the show if her part were longer.  She reminded me so much of Anne Harada, the actress who played the role on Broadway in 2006, with her amazing vocals and wily disposition.  She had the eyebrows of a typical evil villainess and she knew how to use them.  The audience cracked up in laughter when she pulled a tiny banana out while singing the line “thinks he’s quite a lover but there’s not much there.”  That’s something I haven’t seen in any other production of Les Miz.  She’s a bloody wonder!

It’s such a shame the producers decided to cut Beggars at the Feast, the couple’s second big song.  It would have been nice to see them back in their own number.

Marius and Cosette

I was instantly drawn by the vocal prowess of John Michael Fulgencio, who took on the role of Marius.  The moment he first opened his mouth to sing, his voice immediately reminded me of a young Michael Ball, the English tenor who originated the role in the West End.  His notes were smooth and cool—with a stupendous quality showcased when he sang Empty Chairs at Empty Tables on the second night.  On the verge of tears, I remember my cousin, Isa, saying, “He’s way better than Nick Jonas” and she was right to say so.

Cosette was played by Pauline Anne Rosales, a lyric soprano.  I’m glad the production brought back the song, I Saw Him Once, which hasn’t been performed in the musical’s context since the Original West End production in 1985.  It showcased Rosales’ amazing vocal range.  Let me stress, however, that although she and Marius made a cute couple on stage, the strongest chemistry was between the latter and Eponine.

Eponine

Played by Joanna Jane Ang, Eponine was a feisty female waif with a heart-rending sentiment.  Her performance of On My Own was so soul-piercing that I even heard a couple of people clearing their nostrils and throats right before the loud applause.  That could only have meant they were crying.  She portrayed her quiet pain so masterfully that it was agonizing to watch.  A Little Fall of Rain, her duet with Marius right before she dies, drove me to tears on the second night.  With everything that she did before her death, she set the right mood for the audience to weep like they lost their own friend.

Enjolras

Junrey Alayacyac, the young man cast as Enjolras had a remarkable set of pipes which reminded me a lot of David Thaxton, who played the role in 2008 in the West End.  It takes a strong voice to play a leader of the June Rebellion and Alayacyac fit the description perfectly.  The hairs on the back of my neck stood when he began to sing Do You Hear the People Sing to the beat of marching drums.  It was as though he was calling on the audience to join him in battle.  He was as passionate as a real revolutionary and it was clear he was singing with heart.  Perhaps he was singing for a modern kind of revolution.

Young Cosette and Gavroche

Of course, we have to give special mention to these two little people—children with such music-filled futures ahead of them.  It’s clear that it could only get brighter from there on.  Portrayed by Raven Chan, a treble, Young Cosette only appears twice in the entire show—first when she sings Castle on a Cloud and second when she is “bought” by Valjean from the Thenardiers where she is mostly silent.  Little Miss Chan had a memorable angelic voice, which, to this day, still rings in my head like I just heard it an hour ago.

Gavroche, the smart little urchin, was another precious character.  Actor Arjay Chan, who played the role, sang Little People bringing an adorable pause of relief for those who found the preceding events to be too heavy on the heart.  In the end, though, he dies by the guns of the enemy.  Rummaging dead bodies for bullets, Little Mister Chan made our hearts sink when he sang his final solo as his character was being shot repeatedly by the French National Guard, writhing in agony until his last note.

Ensemble

I have to laud the ensemble members for their vocal abilities.  With every single number from the Work Song to the reprise of Do You Hear the People Sing, they showed how much of a formidable bunch they all were.  They must have had a very good choir master because they left me in awe every single time.  Being really close to the stage on the second night, I recognized their faces each time they assumed a different character from their last.  From singing prostitutes to mendicants in the streets of Paris to armed rebels, they took on them with all they had and nailed it with pure awesomeness.

The second night concluded with a reprise of One Day More after the curtain call—this time with members of the crew singing alongside the performers.  Everyone had genuine smiles on their faces—no longer adherent to the miserable theme of the musical—singing their hearts out, knowing they did great.  That standing ovation at the end was very well deserved, to say the least.

Other Matters

This show was not, in any way, sanctioned by Music Theatre International but it doesn’t matter much.  MTI is known to be very lenient with real art lovers.  What’s important is Cre8tive Thespians Circle Inc, through DreamBig Productions, came to Bohol and made us theatre junkies very happy.

For years and years, I’ve been hoping and praying for the musical theatre scene in the province to come alive and take flight again.  I hope Les Misérables’ staging would usher in more productions—even from local art groups—because having a constant urge to fly to other places just to get my fill isn’t a good feeling.  There are many who love theatre here—enough, perhaps, to give a local production company a lucrative source of income.  Who knows?

Bohol has an open door for art.  Do come in, won’t you?

Champions

The Miami HEAT has certainly matured a LOT from last season. I'm having goosebumps right now. It is an honor seeing a great team playing their best basketball in the most important game of the season. And yes, they played as a TEAM. Six players in double figures. Miami Heat - CHAMPIONS!

Criticized. Mocked. Judged.

Now we've paid our dues.
We did our sentence,
but committed no crime.
And bad mistakes,
we've made a few.
We've had our share of sand kicked in our face,
but we came through..

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

OKC and Miami - A Dream Match Up

As expected (but not without resistance), my Miami Heat is going back to the NBA Finals for the second straight year, but this year, they will be facing a team I so admire - The Oklahoma City Thunder.

This is a dream match up for all hoop fans all over the globe. James, Wade, Bosh, Durant, Westbrook, Harden. Wow! The NBA's reigning MVP versus the NBA's reigning scoring champion. It doesn't get better than this.

I'm in a sort of melan state right now, so the Finals will be a welcome distraction for me. Game one tips off on Wednesday (Philippine time) in Oklahoma.

Let's get it on!

Go HEAT!

A Night of Beautiful Music

Last night, my sis invited me to watch this concert with her and some friends, and it was awesome.

I've always loved Edwin McCain's songs ever since, but after watching him live, I'm officially a fan. The guy's so amazing, that I just had to record his 2 biggest hits.

As for Taylor Dayne, I was 7 when she released the song, "Love Will Lead You Back" and 10 years old when this song became number 1.. Who would have thought I'd have the chance to see this amazing woman sing her hit song live?

Both were just amazing! :)

Day 21. Tell us what you experienced reading the book for the first time?

I was honestly bored and sleepy reading the book for the first time. The thickness was discouraging, but I eventually loved it once I got through the more interesting parts.

I have a confession. I wasn't able to really finish the whole book because I skipped through the Napoleon parts, probably the only boring part of the novel.

Turning on the HEAT

I just realized I've been so preoccupied with a lot of things that I haven't blogged about my Miami Heat nor the NBA anymore. Haha.

Well, it's so timely that a few hours from now, King James and the Heat will be eliminating the Indiana Pacers to advance in the Eastern Conference Finals. Yes, I'm very confident that they will take care of business there in Indiana so they'll have time to rest as the Celtics and the Sixers will still have a Game 7 on the other side of the Eastern Conference.

As for the West, I'm so looking forward to the Conference finals with San Antonio and Oklahoma. Wow, it couldn't get better than this. And the Fakers.. er.. Lakers? Well, they're gone fishing now. Haha!

Go HEAT!

A Man Apart

The most dangerous creation of any society
is the man who has nothing to lose.
~James Arthur Baldwin

I am Human

Call me selfish, but I think I have the right to be disappointed.

Imagine this: After experiencing physical pain, you wake up and receive a shocking news that you're no longer directing the upcoming tour which you're so passionate about. Yes, you're still a member of the cast, but after 24 shows that you've given your whole life into, it's taken away and given to someone else.

I don't have anything against the man they gave the directorship to, he's a good man, and we've shared the role of Valjean in those 24 shows, and we've covered each other at those times when one of us was indisposed. When it was announced that the producer of our upcoming tour will be choosing the actors that he wants to play, I already accepted the fact that my alternate, who's more experienced, more good-looking, a better actor and singer than me, will be chosen, and I will be going to the tour as a full-time director. When I was chosen by the producer, to play, it was a total surprise and yes, it made me more excited to be blessed with the role again. I was also excited because that meant my alternate will become the Technical Director, and I've always believed that we work together beautiful with him manning the technicals, and me manning the artistic side. Then yesterday, I just received a surprising text message from our President, someone I've always loved, respected and protected, that my alternate will now be the over-all director, technical AND artistic, for the tour.

Was the previous 24 shows a big disappointment and totally bad that we need to have someone new manning the artistic side? I'm sorry if I'm not good enough. Yes, I have had a lot of help ever since, and I welcome the help, it's just disappointing being replaced, not being really asked about it and being informed through text. It's like raising a beautiful child with help from a lot of good people, and then when the child is already grown-up and doing good, she's taken away from you and given to one of those good people.

I am a reluctant director, and I know I suck as a director, but for the past 24 shows, I did more than my best and the experience changed me. I know it was not the best, but it wasn't that bad as well.

I am hurt.
I am in pain.
I am disappointed.
People don't care.
Life goes on.
I forgive, but I never forget.
I am human.

Back to Basics

Exactly a year after I bought my Xperia X8 phone, I sold it, bought a new battery for my 5 year old Nokia E63 phone, and reactivated it. Haha!

Yes, I'm back to using my old reliable E63, gave up my android phone and back to using a basic phone. Back to using my favorite QUERTY phone over a touch screen phone. I just got tired of using the touch screen for 365 days, so I sold it. Yes, it was in excellent condition so it was a great deal for the lucky guy who bought it at 5K.

As with my favorite phone, the battery died a long time ago (that's why I didn't use it for a long time) and the charger just died today. Yes it's old, but the unit is still very much okay and haven't shown any sign of aging so I'm crossing my fingers that the class A battery I bought, and the unit itself will last longer, hopefully until I can afford to buy a new one in the future.

If and when I'll buy a new phone, it will still be QUERTY over touch screen. If I get lucky with the Samsung Galaxy Y Pro, it's touch screen, but it's also QUERTY. Haha! That's still a dream though, it's too expensive.

I'm Back!

I'm back, and I'm back in a lot of ways. :)

First, I'm back in the morning shift after almost a year in the graveyard shift, and I'm met with so many things to do. Well, at least I get to be busy during the day like a normal person. Haha.

Second, I'm back to applying or reapplying in the academe. I've been so wanting to go back to teaching for the longest time, I just hope that if and when I will, it'll just be around here, like around here in the city and not in the province. Crossing my fingers.

Third, I'm back to singing at weddings, thank's to my dear sister, Kazie, for inviting me to tag along. It felt good. Really good.

Fourth, I'm back to blogging. At least I'm trying to, since I'm now a normal person for the time being. Hope I won't have to disappear once again. Haha!

Day 20. Tell us about your first time seeing the musical?

I will never ever forget the first time I saw the musical, not the full one, just a few excerpts and behind the scenes stuff, but enough to make me remember it all my life.

It was during our victory party after the very first Les Mis production in Cebu in March 1996. We were at the viewing room of the Abejuela's, a family so supportive of our production mainly because our Gavroche and our Young Cosette were from their family.

Mr. Abejuela showed us (it was in Laser Disc) Stage by Stage, the making of Les Mis, and I had goosebumps and tears all throughout the 2 hour special. I was 16 years old, just did a musical I wasn't familiar with, and here I am watching the same musical we just did, but done by the original cast. It was heaven for me.

And yes, until now I have a copy of Stage by Stage on my PC at home, and I've shown it to my cast as well.

Day 19. Least favourite song from the musical?

When I was younger, I hated Empty Chairs at Empty Tables because I thought it was boring. There was a time when I also hated Lovely Ladies because it was annoying. Haha.

Now I'm loving both, and all the songs of Les Mis. I can't think of any song that I hate, or least like. It's kinda funny now that I'm thinking of it. In our production, I'm so looking forward to Lovely Ladies because that's the time when I can properly do my make-up as Mayor in preparation for my next scene, Fantine's Arrest. I also look forward to Empty Chairs at Empty Tables because that's when I do my make-up in preparation for the Epilogue, which is where I finally die. Haha.

Day 18. Is there a part from the book that you wish was in the musical?

I haven't really thought of any scene or part of the book that I so love that I haven't seen in the musical. I think they have done a marvelous job of bringing the book on-stage, and compressing everything into a 3-hour musical. Yes, there are parts that were interchanged, shortened, condensed, but I don't think it diminished the beauty of the novel.

I love both the novel and the musical because it's different, and it's the same at the same time.

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Day 17. Who is your favourite character from the book and you favourite character from the musical?

This is a difficult question because I love every character in Les Mis. As a fan and spectator, I love to watch Enjolras and Eponine. As a thespian, I would love to play Javert someday. As a broken soul, I love Eponine because I'm not sure I'm not the only person who can relate to her and her story. Of course, aside from the characters I've mentioned, I love Valjean and I'm grateful and honored to have played him I forgot how many times already.

Day 16. Your opinions on the upcoming movie?

This is a movie I'm most excited about in recent years. Sure I was awaiting for Avengers, and I'm excited about the Superman reboot, but Les Mis is different. It's a part of my life. I'm so excited to see even a teaser trailer, and I know from the first lines in the trailer, I'll be in tears. A flood of tears.

So far, I'm loving the cast and director, and I'm so loving the leaked photos and vids of the shoot. They're doing live singing during the shoot which is very cool, and something that's not been done by recent movie musicals. I know a lot of people are apprehensive with Russel Crowe and even Anne Hathaway, but the people involved, the director, producers and most especially the composers, they know what they're doing so I totally trust them. Hell, it's Les Mis! So whoever is playing who, I'll still be first in line when it opens in theatres in December!

And I just can't wait to the new song added for the movie. It's entitled Suddenly and it's composed by Les Mis' original composers,  Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg. And yeah, it'll be sung by Valjean.

Day 15. Favourite quote or part of the book and what it mean to you?

Before him he saw two roads, both equally straight;
but he did see two;
and that terrified him -
he who had never in his life known anything but one straight line.
And, bitter anguish,
these two roads were contradictory.

This is not really a favorite part of mine, but one of the many parts in the novel that struck me. You can just imagine what's going on in Javert's mind at that time. The confusion, the uncertainty, the mindset, the belief that's been shattered into a thousand pieces.

Day 14. Favourite line or song from the musical and what it means to you?

This is one line that always makes me tear up. A very powerful yet beautiful line, it is an honor to sing this with Fantine and Eponine during the Epilogue.

Day 13. A part from the book that makes you sad?

He is asleep. Though his mettle was sorely tried,
He lived, and when he lost his angel, died.
It happened calmly, on its own,
The way the night comes when day is done.

Call me bias but the saddest part for me in the book was when Valjean died. It was so simple - a somewhat fitting end to a simple, ordinary man who lived an extraordinary life. It's the saddest part for me because from the start of the book, we've followed Valjean's life, from his trials to his triumph as a person, to being welcomed by angels when his mission on Earth was done.

Thursday, April 12, 2012

Day 12. A part from the musical that makes you sad?

Playing Valjean, the saddest part for me is my own death. Valjean's death I mean. Call me narcissistic but it's my most favorite scene to perform. Every single time I've performed that scene, I just can't hold back my tears. From my first lines, "Alone, I wait in the shadows..", my tears start to fall down as if on cue.

I've seen so many Valjean's doing this scene, but the performance that's always on my mind is Colm Wilkinson's. Every time I do this beautiful scene, I try to channel Colm while pulling out all the raw emotions within me.

Valjean saying his goodbye's to Cosette, while being welcomed by Fantine, Eponine and all those who died at the barricade. Just beautiful ♥

Day 11. How did you first discover Les Miserables?

I remember scanning through the TV channels when I was younger, and seeing a few clips of the 10th Anniversary Concert. The songs were kinda familiar but I wasn't interested then.

When I was 15 years old, there was an audition for a local production of Les Mis, and I - without any experience of singing nor acting, and without knowing what Les Mis is - went and tried out only for experience, so that I won't have any regrets later on in life that I didn't know what an audition was like. It was for experience, no one knew me anyway.

By luck and fate, I got in and since then, I got hooked to Les Mis that now, 15 years after, I consider myself a Les Mis freak and proud of it.

Day 10. Favourite Les Amis and why?

I'm confused because each has its own characteristics which are lovable. It's a toss up between Prouvaire and Grantaire. I can see myself as a combination of the two. Prouvaire is a well-spoken romantic while Grantaire is a  cynical drunkard who believes in nothing. Though I don't see myself as well-spoken and I don't drink, I'd like to think that I'm romantic but also a passive schmuck who's very cynical.

Monday, April 9, 2012

Day 9. Favourite Grantaire and why?

Anthony Crivello and Hadley Fraser have different portrayals of Grantaire which I both love so for this challenge, I have to choose both of them as my favorite Grantaire's.

This is something I've always told my actors: Making the character your own without destroying it. Anthony and Hadley are both very effective and amazing Grantaire's, yet very different at the same time.

Will the world remember you when you fall? Could it be your death means nothing at all? Is your life just one more lie?

Sunday, April 8, 2012

Day 8. Favourite M & Mme Thénardier and why?

In the longest time that I've played the role Thénardier, I've always patterned my portrayal after Barry James. From the character singing to the make up to the facial expression. Alun Armstrong is also very good, but for me, his portrayal is effective only to the Western audience. The Asian audience, most especially the Filipinos, are more visual so they should see Thénardier aside from listening to his lines. For me, Barry James is not as radical as the late Leo Burmester, and not as passive as Alun.

For Madame Thénardier, I loved Jenny Galloway in the 10th Anniversary, but was disappointed with her in the 25th. She seemed so.. uninterested and bored. Yes, she tried a different approach but it was disappointing to say the least. My favorite madame for now would be Jennifer Butt of the original Broadway cast. I love how clear her words are, and she was able to portray the character effectively without sacrificing quality and clarity of singing.

Saturday, April 7, 2012

Day 7. Favourite Enjolras and why?

For the longest time, Michael Maguire has always been THE Enjolras for me. Sure, Ramin Karimloo and Anthony Warlow are close second and third, but just recently, all of them are now second to David Thaxton. I mean, this man is really amazing. I cannot forget how he flew from barricade during the final battle, just before he died. Yes, the blocking is for him to jump, but he definitely did more than that. If you watch the video, you can see how he flew instead of jump.

I just love how he blends the passion of Enjolras with the recklessness of youth as after all, Enjolras is a student leader. So there, David Thaxton's first while Michael, Ramin and Anthony are all second.

Friday, April 6, 2012

Day 6. Favourite Eponine and why?

I have to say I loved the portrayal of Ma-Anne Dionisio most. Yes, I know a lot of people don't know her. She's the second Filipina to play the role next to the great Lea Salonga, and yes, I so love Ma-Anne's Eponine. It's like combining the strengths of Lea and Frances Rufelle. And yes, Frances is my second favorite followed by Lea and Samantha Barks.

Thursday, April 5, 2012

Day 5. Favourite Marius and why?

Michael Ball.

No one even close to his shadow.

Gareth Gates was also impressive, most especially when he sang Empty Chairs at Empty Tables at Michael Ball's show! Wow! Imagine the pressure singing a very beautiful but heavy song on the show of the person who originally sang it. And he was more impressive when his emotion shifted at the start of the song, so yes, Gareth Gates is a distant second as my favorite Marius.

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

Day 4. Favourite Cosette and why?

Although I am torn between the original London Cosette and the original Broadway Cosette, I have to go with Rebecca Caine. Have you seen her in the 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2? I mean, Katie Hall was amazing in that concert, but when Rebecca sang Cosette's lines, WOW! Just amazing.

And since we're already in the Favorite Cosette topic, I would like to say that my most fave Cosette's would be Pauline, Justine and Pia - not necessarily in that order. It has been an amazing experience playing Valjean with these three gifted young women. I love them so much!

Trying to Return

Okay, I wasn't able to continue the Les Mis Challenge nor was I able to post anything here for a month. Been so busy making history. Haha!

Now that it's just work and home for me, I'll try to return to blogging. Yes, I will try to finish the Les Mis challenge, and I will try to go back to writing (blogging included), hopefully serious writing with my sister. Wish me luck!

Saturday, March 3, 2012

Day 3. Favourite Fantine and why?

Now this is quite challenging.

So many great women have played this beautiful character on-stage, and though each one is truly amazing, my personal favorite would have to be Ruthie Henshall. Probably not the best singer of all the Fantine's, but definitely my fave to portray the character.

Friday, March 2, 2012

Day 2. Favourite Javert and Why?

Philip Quast. Period.

Oh, I have to answer the Why? part! Right. I hope this vid clip will be able to explain it.

Yes, He IS Javert.

Thursday, March 1, 2012

Day 1. Favourite Valjean and why?

First question. Favorite (yes, American English spelling) Valjean and Why.

Is this even a question? Haha!

Colm Wilkinson will always be my Valjean. And not only because he is the original Valjean, but because he personifies who and what Jean Valjean is. He is my greatest influence in playing this amazing character. His first notes for Bring Him Home (which by the way is a song that was written specifically for him) just brings me to tears every time. Simply amazing!

This is Colm now. Old, but still sooo amazing! :)
